ABOUT CONTACT
(b.1978, Poole, UK) is a painter and lecturer based in Belfast. Hanlon works from ostensibly minor images, using painting to subtly displace and reframe them. These sources function as a kind of ready-made, foregrounding the object quality of things while operating as an armature for considerations of composition, framing, and spatial ambiguity. What begins in a state of indifference becomes a site for sustained looking, where meaning is neither fixed nor imposed but allowed to emerge. Tensions between flatness and illusion, objecthood and abstraction, are held in deliberate suspension. Through the slow material process of painting, these images are reconstituted and displaced from their original context, shifting emphasis toward looking, duration, and encounter.
